Menopause Information to Know Today …

So that you can decide what’s best for you!

Menopause Timeline:

  • Can start in your mid-late 30s

  • Average age of menopause is 51-53 years old.

  • Symptoms can continue past menopause and last for years.

Menopause is defined by:

  • Going a full 12 months without a period.

Menopause is characterized by:

  • Significant hormone changes that lead to various symptoms (see below) and changes in your menstrual cycle

Don’t forget:

  • Expect to experience an unpredictable menstrual cycle!

  • Early menopause…your cycle will lengthen maybe about a week, or you might skip a period all together. You may or may not have symptoms.

  • You may have symptoms before your menstrual cycle changes.

  • Late menopause…Cycles may range from 14 to 50 days. You’re more likely to have symptoms.

  • When you do have a period, it may be heavier or lighter. Who knows!

Symptoms to look for:

low energy, hot flashes, night sweats, stress, brain fog, loss in productivity, depression, anxiety, feeling useless, added belly fat, trouble sleeping, fatigue, pelvic floor issues, vaginal dryness, mood swings, and headaches

In addition, keep these changes in mind:

  • muscle and bone loss increase greatly

  • the risk of cardiovascular disease

  • every system of the body is impacted by these changes in hormones.

Important to know:

If you experience any of these changes, please consult your healthcare provider instead of assuming they are normal. Many serious illnesses can have similar symptoms, so never assume it’s menopause. When in doubt, get it checked out!

Some final thoughts:

  • Every woman is unique, so menopause will be experienced differently. Don’t compare you to others!

  • Your symptoms will vary in intensity as the hormones change.

  • All of this means your lifestyle, choices, and self care strategies will need to evolve as well.
